Apparently Hollywood is not about to leave Chris Crocker alone.
A bleachblonde, eyelinerwearing Crocker made national headlines recently with his tearful defense of Britney Spears and her abysmal performance at the MTV Awards.
He was even interviewed via Web cam on “the Jimmy Kimmel Show. He kept pushing up the brassiere he was wearing to keep it on camera. It ended up somewhere near his clavicle.
Crocker claims to be a 19-year-old gay man who lives with his grandparents in a small Southern town. Even before his crying, screaming rant over the pop tart, Chris had become an Internet celeb of a sorts due to the 60-plus rants he had posted on youtube.com. Most were apparently taped in his closet.
“The name is Chris. Chris Crocker,” says an introduction page on YouTube for his videos.
“The game is positivity. I believe the best way to educate and spread positivity is through entertainment, which translates to edutainment. Which just so happens to be my specialty.”
For all of his claims to “positivity,” Chris spends much of his time in full, drama-queen mode, insulting his detractors — which seems to have a lot of “negativitness-ocity” to me.
These are all about a young gay man who has known he hasn’t fit in since he was 5 and brought his Barbies to show and tell.
Apparently, the hatred and threat of violence was so real in the town that Chris’ grandmother homeschooled him through high school.
In a sense, I admire Chris and his willingness to stand up and be himself. He has lived in a nearly impossible situation, which would have crushed many people.
I don’t care who Chris sleeps with, but I have to draw the line at “Brotherly Love,” a video he posted back in March.
In this video, Chris and his then boyfriend Scotty said they were legally brothers but spiritually lovers. In between passionate kisses, they said their mother didn’t mind them having sex together. “She just wants us to be happy,” Chris said.
PETA members will be glad to know that while he advocates incest he does not believe in bestiality in his own life.
“I have never loved a goat,” he said in the video. But he told viewers that it was OK to really love our furry friends.
“Brotherly Love” has now disappeared from YouTube in its original form. Also gone is a question-and-answer blog posted on his myspace.com page where he admits he is an entertainer and many of the videos are just skits.
This whole thing has been about Chris getting his own reality show and getting the heck out of Dodge.
Ironically, his dreams of escape may be thwarted by his fame.
He has been signed to a development deal. But the bad news is that the TV series may be predicated on his situation. Interest in the show may wane if you pull him out of redneck-infested waters.
The headline on his myspace.com page reads, “Who am I? It’s more like WHAT am I! I am the future.”
Let’s hope not.
I would hate to think our society has been reduced to people saying the worst things and then getting a TV show out of it.
One of the problems with being 19 is that thinking about the future only means next year.
Like it or not, Chris has sealed his fate. For the rest of his life, he’s going to be like a circus freak. People will come along, poke him with a stick and demand he shriek something outrageous.
When somebody comes along that is even more desperate for attention, Chris may find himself very lonely.
